“There is a time for everything, and a season for every activity under the heavens.”
Book of Ecclesiastes 3:1 // NIV
Today we are going to talk briefly about time. In fact, in today’s scripture, we hear that “there is a time for everything, and a season for every activity under the Heavens.” Though this Bible passage is the inspired Word of God that was written long ago in the Old Testament, it still holds true today. With God, there IS a time for everything—and it is in His perfect time, through prayer, that we can see Him doing His finest work on our behalf and for our loved ones we pray for.
How Do You Spend Your Time?
We all have just 24 hours in any given day to live our lives, and about 8 hours of each day is spent sleeping! So our time is limited each day. The pressing questions is this: What are you doing with the time you have? Do you spend your precious time complaining about others or the life you live, or are you working hard to be a good steward of your time by using your time for the good? Do you try to use your time to encourage, lift up, and bring hope to the people around you to build up the Kingdom of God? I believe that is God’s plan for us as Christians.
And how do you feel about your time? Does time race by, or does it seem to come to come to a standstill some days? Do you feel like you have enough time to do what you want and need to do, or does it seem like there is never enough time to accomplish all you need to do in a day? Does time sometimes seem to be at a standstill where you feel frozen and unable to do anything, as can happen when one experiences anxiety and/or clinical depression?
Having goals for how we use our time can be very helpful. When Jesus walked the earth, He dedicated his time—his life–to leading souls to God to eternal life. In truth, He was a man on the holiest of missions. Saving souls and leading them to Heaven was his mission and His goal. His actual ministry was just 3 years long—but He changed the world forever in that short period of time through His mission!
Jesus Spent His Time On Earth For Us
Today, we are still benefitting from how Jesus chose to spend His time working to save sinners weary, broken souls–yours and mine. Truly, Jesus IS the living God, and He is still with us working in our daily lives both day and night, to help us in every way possible. He IS our protector, guide, healer, comforter us and Savior—saving us from this fallen world we live in. Even saving us from ourselves at times–with all our sins, bad habits and flaws. It is truly awe-inspiring when you think about how Jesus continues to be there for us each day, and in every season of our lives!
So how did Jesus spend his time on earth? Well, He spent His time spreading the Good News of salvation to all whom he met, seeking out people from every possible lifestyle and background to minister to. He shared the gospel message of God’s unconditional love, repentance, forgiveness, and salvation for all people— believers, non-believers, and sinners, alike. There was no end to all the good Jesus did with his time on earth, for our benefit.
When Jesus walked the earth, He knew His time was limited. He even tells us that in the following Bible passage:
“Jesus said, “I am with you for only a short time, and then I am going to the one who sent me.”’ John 7:33
For Jesus, every moment was a blessed opportunity for service to God. He used his time and gifts carefully and generously, to share the Gospel with people in a way that they could understand. He met both believers and non-believers, exactly where they were, in their lives and faith. Many people sought Him out, and followed him. Many came to know that He was the Messiah, and they trusted that His message of salvation was anointed and true, and that He was the Messiah.
Jesus tried to prepare the people that He encountered for salvation, and to believe that one day He would return in glory. Scripture tells us that Jesus said that no one will know the exact day or hour of His return. Only God knows the precise day and time of His return. But Jesus did let us know He is coming back, and that we need to be ready. He chose His words very carefully as He taught that we should live each day to the fullest, one day at a time, according to God’s will, as if each day were our last. I think the following Bible passage says it best in the following 2 scriptures:
“Heaven and earth will pass away, but My words will never pass away. But about that day or hour no one knows, not even the angels in heaven, nor the Son, but only the Father.” Matthew 24:35
Then Jesus went on to tell us:
“Therefore keep watch, because you do not know on what day your Lord will come…. So you also must be ready, because the Son of Man will come at an hour when you do not expect him.”
Matthew 24:43-44
No Need to Waste Time Worrying
When we pray to Jesus, there is no need to waste our time worrying about what is, and what will be. Time is way too precious to waste it on worry about anything or negativity. I understand that is easier said than done. But perhaps it’s time for us to take a look at how we spend our days, our time. Are you on your phone or computer surfing the internet most of the time, or watching TV for hours on end? Pulling other people down to make ourselves feel better? Complaining about others and your life? I truly doubt that is what Jesus had in mind for us.
Actually, I think God intends for us pray and read God’s Word—the Bible often if not daily. To learn the will of God and to build a relationship with Jesus and to live a blessed life. He wants us to become a little kinder, gentler, and more patient with each other with the passing of time; to be more patient, peace-filled and; more faithful and faith-filled. He wants us to be steadfast in what we believe, and trust Jesus in all things.
We need to live each day and stay in the moment, without wishing our lives away or wallowing in regrets saying: “If only I had …” If only my family had treated me better…” “If only I had been a better parent…” If only I had had a better job when I was working…” We need to understand and believe that who we are and what we do today, moving forward, is what matters most.
There is no need to use your time looking to this world for hope, comfort, or peace, as Jesus is the source of all of that—not this world. When you live in Christ each day, there is no room for regrets. Just the honest desire to begin anew and fresh each morning, to use your precious gifts, blessings and time to share God’s Love freely with others, wherever you go.
