“Confess your sins to one another and pray for one another, that you may be healed. The fervent prayer of a righteous person is very powerful.” James 5:16
Everyday miracles. Do you believe in miracles? How about everyday miracles—blessed things that happen in the course of our day that let us know that God is alive, present, and in control of our lives? Do you believe that big and small things can happen that are seemingly impossible, except through heartfelt prayer and the power of God’s holy intervention? When you really look for miracles you will find them…
“By his wounds you have been healed.”
I Peter 2:24
Sometimes miracles can be little things that happen in the course of your day, things that you would not generally consider to be a miracle—but they are. Like when you lose your phone charger, and it turns up where you first looked after you have scoured the house over and again looking for it. Or when you get to your doctor appointment late, only to learn that the doctor is also running behind schedule. There are endless examples of miracles that occur in our daily lives, some a lot more serious than others, like when you are driving and a car comes into your lane cutting in front of you, and you narrowly escape a serious accident. Or when you see ambulances rushing to the accident that happened at the intersection you just passed through.
What about the extraordinary miracle that occurs when a child is healed of a brain tumor after his family & friends pray fervently for a full healing? Or when a young woman has had several miscarriages, then finds out she is pregnant for the first time after she and her husband have given up on having their own baby. I’m sure you, too can think of times when things happened (or didn’t happen) to you or a loved one that could not be explained any other way than that God helped you or saved you from something. Again, that’s how you know it’s a miracle!
“Lest they see with their eyes, and hear with their ears, and their heart understand, and they turn and be healed.”
Isaiah 6:10
I have a personal story to share about something that happened to my husband and me enabling us to experience God’s loving protection—a miracle. A type of tornado called a ‘microburst’ come through our neighborhood into our yard. As it was coming through, we heard a loud sound like a train in the distance, coming towards our home. After it had passed through, we went outside and found that the devastating winds were so strong, that they took off the top of one of the tallest trees in our yard. The tree top had been twisted right off of the top of tree! Large tree branches and debris were everywhere in both our front and back yard. There were powerlines across our driveway in the front yard, and our road was closed for a day or two, but it did not touch our house, except we lost electricity for a couple of days. What a close call! We really felt that God had intervened and protected us. To this day, we consider it a miracle that the damaging winds did not destroy our home, and we still feel so blessed that no one got hurt! We just knew it was a miracle from God!
Another time, about a year later, I was sitting in my kitchen making rosaries at the kitchen counter, and suddenly, we heard a loud sound we had never heard before. Turns out lightening had just hit our house right outside the window where I was sitting. Yes, it was scary, but we only lost a computer, printer, stereo system, and a TV, but again, by the grace of God, no one was hurt.
God’s protection is unmatched. It is easy to know when He performs miracles in our lives, especially when there is no other way to explain unusual things that happen in our lives. Yes, everyday miracles from God happen often, but the question is, do we even notice them, and most of all, do we give God the credit for the blessings He sends our way? Perhaps when we pray we should do so with confidence and with great anticipation to see what God will do next in our lives.
