“…Afflicted in every way, but not crushed; perplexed, but not driven to despair; persecuted, but not forsaken; struck down, but not destroyed…” 2 Corinthians 4:8-9 [NIV]
In the Christian faith, we are taught to keep our eyes squarely on Jesus, the Great Healer, Comforter, Protector, Lord and Savior, and with good reason. This Scripture reveals the truth about what happens when we do so. Yes, life happens as it will, but as beneficiaries of Jesus’ love, we can reach many benefits, simply by asking for His help and intercession.
With Jesus as the Great Healer, we don’t need to worry about tomorrow. He is already there working things out for the good. . In adversity, through this Bible passage, He ensures us we will not be crushed by the weight of our burdens. In fact He beckons us to give them to Him and He deals with them accordingly. Yes, He may allow us to go to the brink of what we can endure. He may even wait to give us an “11th hour save,” so to speak, as situations seem to spiral out of control and reach a dire level of mayhem. That is, He allows us to go to the end of our rope, then provides blessed relief for us from infirmity, disability, mental illness, financial strain, unemployment job related concerns and every plight. With Jesus, we have a sort of resiliency and endurance that we do not have without Him left to our own devices; and through prayer and the power of the Holy Spirit, we can endure great things far better than on our own.
We may be perplexed in every way, even to our very limit, but not driven to despair. For He is there to catch us as we are falling and restores us to a sound mind when we are troubled. He can and will normalize any circumstance, and bring us peace, and though we may face persecution and adversaries on every side, He will deliver us into His loving arms and He will personally deal with any and every evil that surrounds us on our behalf.
Though we may be leveled by circumstances and at times, other people, He will not allow us to be destroyed by evil, but will work things out for our benefit, for the benefit of believers who follow His Divine Will. He will not forsake us, and though we may be temporarily struck down, He will not allow us to be destroyed. For Jesus is with us fighting our battles with us and for us in the most amazing ways. He is the Victor, the Alpha and the Omega, and in Him there is no darkness at all!
Jesus will shine His Light upon every circumstance, every soul, as a lighthouse showing believers the way while providing protection for the just, and conversely exposing those who seek to harm His flock. In this way, He preserves His people, and thwarts those who threaten to do His people harm. For those who follow Jesus, the battle has already been won by His dying on the cross and rising on the third day for all of humanity. Following Jesus is a choice available to all, one that provides ongoing promises of victory for those who embrace His Word, His Way.
