“He replied, ‘“Rather, blessed are those who hear the Word of God and observe it.”’
Luke 11:28
God speaks to each of us in a very special way that we can understand, so that we can ask for, and receive his blessings, learn His ways, follow Him, and worship Him. Through prayer, other people, thoughts, feelings, gut instincts, intuition, and conscience, we can discern the will of God for us and our loved ones. Some people, though rare, even hear God’s voice. However, He has also given us a tremendous gift, through the power of the Holy Spirit: the Holy Bible, which is eternally important when it comes to helping us to discern God’s Will in our daily lives, through His inspired Word.
“Indeed, the Word of God is living and effective, sharper than any two-edged sword, penetrating even between soul and spirit, joints and marrow, and able to discern reflections and thoughts of the heart.”
Hebrews 4:12
About the Bible
*1,400 BC: The first written Word of God: The Ten Commandments delivered to Moses.
*The first English version of the Bible, New & Old Testament, was reportedly published in 1382 by a man named John Wycliffe.
*There are about 50 versions of the Bible written in English in the US today.
*Hard to believe, but the Bible is the most stolen book in the world. Bibles are regularly taken from hotels, hospitals, bookstores, and other locations.
*World-wide, the Bible has been translated into over 700 languages
*The Old Testament & New Testament were written over the course of about 1,500 years.
*The Bible, Old Testament and New Testament, is a compilation of books written by 40 different authors.
*It was written in Asia, Europe and Africa and in 3 different languages: Hebrew, Aramaic and Greek.
*The Holy Bible is the most-read, best-selling, and shared book in the world with 20 million Bibles purchased each year, and 100 million bibles sold, given away, or donated annually.
The Protestant Bible has 66 books, and the Catholic Bible has 73 books because for whatever reason, Martin Luther did not include 7 of the books of the original Catholic Bible in his Bible version.
The Holy Bible: The Actual Word of God
We are so privileged to have the Holy Bible, and to be able to read the Word of God as often as we wish. For the Bible is filled with unprecedented guidance and wisdom not found anywhere else that we can directly apply in our own lives, and share with others. There really is no other person, no church, no faith leader, no other book that talks about the Bible that can replace reading the Bible ourselves, as it IS the actual inspired Word of God. Accuracy and context. It is God speaking directly to us! So let’s take a look at some scriptures that talk about the value and importance of reading scripture as it’s written, in context, in the Bible. Here are some basic scriptures that talk about the Bible, directly from the Bible, the inspired Word of God:
2 Timothy 3:16
“All scripture is inspired by God and is useful for teaching, for [refuting], for correction, and for training in righteousness, so that one who belongs to God may be competent, equipped for every good work.”
Colossians 3:16
“Let the Word of Christ dwell in you richly, as in all wisdom you teach and admonish one another, singing psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs with gratitude in your hearts to God.”
I Peter 4:11
“Whoever preaches, let it be with the Words of God; whoever serves, let it be with the strength that God supplies, so that in all things God may be glorified through Jesus Christ…”
Ephesians 6:16-18
“In all circumstances, hold faith as a shield, to quench all [the] flaming arrows of the evil one. And take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the Word of God.”
John 8:47
“Whoever belongs to God hears the Words of God…”
Yes—-the Bible contains abundant, timeless wisdom and truths not found anywhere else. Personally, I have found that when I pray, then open up my Bible to read scripture passages, I learn many things that I can apply to my life in practical ways. With each Bible reading, I feel closer to God, closer to Jesus Christ.
If you would like to read the Bible but don’t know where to start, I suggest starting with either the Book of John or the Book of Matthew. So rich in discernment and wisdom! Regardless of whether or not you attend church or have read about the Bible, actually reading these chapters for yourself will change your life, help you grow in your faith, and help you build a stronger relationship with Jesus Christ. A relationship with Jesus is a relationship like no other, and the benefits are both in the here and now, and for all of eternity!
I Thessalonians 2:13
“And for this reason we too give thanks to God unceasingly, that, in receiving the Word of God from hearing us, you received not a human word but, as it truly is, the Word of God, which is now at work in you who believe.”
