Something went wrong.

“Amen, amen, I say to you, whoever believes has eternal life.”

John 6:47

If you have ever had times when you struggle with unbelief in God, and prayed. “Lord, heal my unbelief,” then you are in great company!

According to the Book of Genesis in the Old Testament, Abraham was 100 years old and his wife Sarah was 90 when they were told they would have children. One can only imagine how they must have felt hearing that after having tried to conceive unsuccessfully for a lifetime—especially since they were very up in age. Shocked, afraid, elated, doubting they heard God right—even ambivalent due to their age? Maybe all these things! But what God had told them all came to fruition, though Sarah had been barren all her life and unable to have children.

Every Reason Not to Believe

I’m sure they had every reason to believe it was not going to happen as God had told them it would. But they chose to believe what He had told them. So Sarah & Abraham believed and trusted God’s words to Abraham, and they became new parents in their elderly years despite all the odds. Abraham became the Patriarch of his family, the Jewish people, and subsequently, the 12 tribes of Israel, as God had said he would, through his son Isaac, and his grandson Jacob and their extended families. A holy, nation favored by God, over all other people.

[Jesus said]: “Everything is possible to one who has faith.”

Mark 9:23

There are so many other examples in the Old and New Testament of how faith and belief in God changed people’s lives in unexpected and blessed ways. Another great example is Mary, Jesus’ mother. She believed what the angel Gabriel told her would come to be—and her belief and saying ‘Yes” to God changed her life and the life of the world forever, in an instant, as she trusted what she had been told. At the age of 14 and a virgin, unmarried to her betrothed Joseph, Mary soon conceived through the power of the Holy Spirit, and went on to give birth to God’s Only Son, Jesus Christ, the Savior and Redeemer of the World. What was Mary’s response to the surprise visit from the angel Gabriel:

“…Nothing will be impossible for God.” 38 Mary said, “Behold, I am the handmaid of the Lord. May it be done to me according to your word.”

Luke 1:37-38

There are so many examples in both the Old and New Testament of how people trusted God, and how He did awe-inspiring things for and through them, because of their faith and belief in Him. Like the young boy with seizures that was in dire need of healing, whom Jesus healed after his father humbly acknowledged his own unbelief saying after asking Jesus:

”Heal my unbelief!”

Mark 9:24

Full of Surprises

Life can be difficult—and full of surprises. If you are feeling lost, are grieving, in need of healing, or feeling faith-challenged today. If your belief in Jesus is waning and you need a boost, it may be a good time to say the following one-second prayer just as the boy’s father did: “Jesus help my unbelief.” You may be very surprised at how God will intercede, boost your faith and belief in Him, and hence, help you to receive God’s tremendous blessings for you. Jesus is there for each of us, but we need to reach out to Him. I pray this day that you will take this opportunity to humbly seek God out during this special Lenten season. May Jesus enhance your belief in Him as you pray, “Jesus heal my unbelief!” In this time of forgiveness and spiritual growth, may you experience the love of Jesus and grow in your belief and trust in Him, and share that belief with others.

“If you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.”

Romans 10:9
