Jesus: Your Greatest Resource

When I was very young, my mother struggled dearly with mental illness–so much so, that she had to be hospitalized for 2 years when I was just 6 years old. However, before she left, she shared something life-changing that gave me tremendous hope. Though I did not know what was to come, it is highly likely that she did. That day, Mom told me about God, Jesus, and the Holy Spirit. She told me that they would always be with me and take care of me and our family. As if preparing me for what was ahead, she did this just days before she went into a mental hospital where she was inpatient for 2 years.

Life without Mom was really hard, especially since she was taken away abruptly. However, as she had foretold, Jesus gave me the grace to endure missing her while she was away, and helped me through the childhood trauma that transpired during that time. I soon learned, during those most difficult years that Jesus was, and still is, my everything!  In a way, Jesus was all that I had. I was separated from my siblings and left in the care of my father who was in the Mafia and took me with him while doing “business,” in New York and New Jersey, during the time Mom was away, Throughout that time, I saw way too much for a young child to process. But Jesus was ever-present, there with me to strengthen, protect, and comfort me at every turn. And He did just that!

Flashbacks and Nightmares

As a lifelong Catholic Christian adult, I always thought I had a strong faith—until my faith was sorely tested when I experienced PTSD and major depression as an adult. This was due to untreated childhood trauma from my youth. My life had come to a screeching halt, as the traumatic memories became flooding my mind were ever-present, and all-consuming. My prayer life seemed to have gone from being a beautiful rose, to a withered flower. I had lost both my way and my life purpose, and also the desire to live as I was haunted by recovered memories from my youth. At times, God seemed so distant. At other times, Jesus seemed close enough to take His pulse. But prayer did not come easily as I was so broken, I didn’t even know what to pray for!

I had often prayed for God’s help in the past, and knew He had always answered my prayers, my heartfelt pleas, in the most amazing ways before. I knew He was the only One who could heal my brokenness, and I needed all the help I could get. So I leaned on Him in my time of greatest need. Fully dependent on Jesus for strength, peace, and the courage to get help, I believed Jesus was (and still is) my greatest resource; The One who could restore me in mind, body & spirit. In my despair, it seemed impossible to pray, as I didn’t even know wheat to ask for.

The Power in 2-Second Prayers

Unable to pray for myself as I had always done before, I depended on what I call 2-second prayers to get me through. And they did! God heard and answered my prayers, with His unfailing help, I was eventually healed in mind, body and spirit. 2-second prayers are the kind of prayers you say under your breath when things are going awry:

  • “Heaven help me,”
  • “Heal me Lord!”
  • Please help me, Lord!
  • “Jesus, I trust in You.”
  • “God, be with me!”

To this day, I feel so blessed that my mother taught me early in my life about God, Jesus, and the Holy Spirit. I was blessed to learn that God was all-knowing, all-loving and ever-present early on. God sees and knows our difficulties, weaknesses, and frailties –yours and mine–before we even ask Him for help. Jesus was able to help me like no one else ever could. From all of this I came to see that Jesus is closest during our times of greatest adversity, difficulty & even despair. I now trust in Him fully knowing that there isn’t anything God can’t do, or wouldn’t do, for those who seek Him in earnest. For scripture tells us:

“If you seek Him, you will find Him. And He will change your lot!”

Jeremiah 29:13 / NABRE
