“If God is for us, who can be against us?”
Romans 8:31 (NIV)

Is it possible to experience God’s blessings in adversity? Consider the Bible story of David and Goliath, one you have likely heard, time and again. David, a prayerful, holy man showed up to fight Goliath, a giant, with nothing more than a flimsy slingshot. He was steeped in prayer, but appeared to be woefully unprepared for the battle he was facing. Surely many that were watching laughed and jeered, and his backers feared for his life when they saw him standing next Goliath the Giant with his simple hand carved chosen weapon. It was like bringing plastic picnic cutlery to fight the biggest physical battle he’d ever fought.

Surely David’s victory seemed an impossibility to all who were there, right from the very moment he walked up to face the giant. However, to everyone’s shock, David won the fight with ease. Though his chosen weapon appeared to be inadequate, even laughable. He seemed fully unprepared to even try to defeat the giant that stood before him trying to kill him. David did not die. Instead he mightily won the battle through God’s blessings in adversity!

Where Does Your Strength Come From?

On his own strength, David never could have lived through such a battle–let alone won. but he did! So the pressing question here is this: How did David conquer his giant enemy with just a simple hand carved slingshot? Because he had a secret weapon: Prayer! God fought his battle for him, bringing him a huge and unexpected victory, and saved his life. The same is possible for you with the ‘giants’ in your life!

David’s victory over Goliath the Giant was not a fluke. Winning this epic battle was the outcome of fervent prayer. I can reassure you he did not fight that battle alone. It was born from David’s courage, belief and trust in God’s ability to save Him in his greatest time of need. God gave David strength in weakness. He believed and trusted that God would show up and fight his battle, both with him—and for him. And He did. God’s miracle was on display for all to see, as everyone knew David could not have won the fight on his own. It was God’s divine intervention that saved him from being maimed or even killed. Prayer enabled him to win the battle with Goliath the Giant. He knew the odds were stacked against him, but he faced his fears in holiness, and fought the good fight anyway with unnatural, seemingly foolish confidence, trusting that God would show up. He was not disappointed.

God often chooses the most unlikely, weak, flawed people to do His finest work. Abraham & Sarah. Elijah. Moses. Aaron. Jeremiah. Esther. Mary & Joseph. But we need to trust and believe that God knows exactly what He is doing. He has us covered. For the asking, Jesus will generously provide us with ample, uncommon, and unexpected strength in times of weakness when we are fighting our own giants–the adversity we face.

God Uses the Weak

God uses the weak and makes them strong as only He can. Though this is counter-intuitive in the worldly sense, God’s provision of strength and even joy in times of weakness is a core Bible teaching. It means that God can (and will) use anyone, anywhere, anytime. He even uses what is intended for evil for good! No weapon used against you shall prosper! He will use you if you seek Him and follow Him with all your heart! But we need to pray and invite Jesus in!

God will always provide for you and equip you for whatever challenges you encounter if you seek His help. If He gives you a calling, he will equip and prepare you to accomplish His good work. Your job is to try to step out of your comfort zone, seek God, and follow your calling. You simply need to do your part, invite Jesus into every situation, and He will do the rest. That is exactly what David, did—and we all saw what happened for him. The same can happen for you!

Your Strength & Shield

If what the Bible says is true—and I believe it is–God is our shield and strength in times of weakness. So why not turn to Him before we feel like we are floundering, drowning in our own weakness? Jesus will give us the strength, whatever we need,  to persevere, and meet the challenge before you head-on, with confidence, as we place our trust in Him. We need to pray and trust that God’s got each of us in the palm of His loving hand, especially as we are fighting the giants in our lives.

Through turning to God in prayer, we can experience His tremendous blessings in adversity. We only need to pray with confidence and anticipation, as we invite Jesus into every situation, then wait and see what He will do next!
