I have an extraordinary personal healing miracle story to share with you… God saved my life!
“O Lord, my God, I cried out to you for help and you healed me.”
Psalm 30:3
Recently, in March/April, I was hospitalized in the ICU Stepdown for 3 weeks including over Easter, with difficulty breathing and swallowing issues; garbled speech, and mobility issues—all due to severe muscle weakness from a life-threatening condition, myasthenia gravis. As you can imagine, all I wanted to do was be home for Easter with my family. Though my medical condition was already dire due to breathing issues, I soon learned that that I also had 2 other serious, unrelated complications—both upper and lower GI internal bleeding. Clearly, there was no way I was going to be home to go to Easter Mass or have dinner with my loved ones as planned.
As a retired nurse, I knew time was of the essence, and they needed to act quickly. However, they had a difficult dilemma. They had to treat the myasthenic crisis, the life-threatening breathing problems, but I was also in danger of hemorrhaging from the internal bleeding….If they gave me anesthesia, I would have to be intubated, and likely placed on life support for 2 days to 2 weeks, as people in myasthenic crisis generally have difficulty coming off of a ventilator. They also said I would eventually go home with a trach upon discharge, if I had the surgery. The decision was mine to make, but it seemed like an impossible one.
Teary, and feeling overwhelmed, afraid and alone, I turned to God to ask for His help. I closed my eyes and began to pray in my hospital bed, asking Jesus, The Great Healer, to give me discernment, and a complete healing of the internal bleeding. Soon after I finished praying, the anesthesiologist came in to discuss in detail my rapidly evolving internal bleeding, and the imminent surgery that was being scheduled.
Ultimately, the decision was mine, but what transpired next was nothing short of miraculous, the result of fervent prayer by so many praying family and friends, and God’s grace as He heard and powerfully answered teach one. I will always be deeply grateful to Jesus, and am still in awe of what He did to save my life…
The Praying Doctor
Doctor: “We have to do surgery to find the source of the bleed to stop it, ASAP. However, the surgery will be complicated and very risky, so we are preparing a bed for you in the Neuro-ICU. You will likely need to be intubated for between 2 days & 2 weeks, due to the effects of anesthesia and the acute myasthenia. Unfortunately, once intubated, many patients with myasthenia gravis have difficulty coming off of respiratory life support. Also, you will probably be going home on a ventilator with a trach after the surgery.”
Me: “Is it possible for the bleeding to heal spontaneously on its own?”
Doctor: “It’s highly unlikely, as that’s not how these things go…But I’m hoping and praying…”
Once I realized I had a praying doctor and remembered the following scripture:
“Where 2 or more are gathered in my name, I am in their midst…”
Matthew 18:20
Me: “Please stop right there…Did you say you were praying?”
Doctor: “Yes.”
Me: I just made my decision! If I have a praying doctor, and my husband and I, and all our family & friends are praying, I know God will hear our prayers and heal me without surgery! But just so I’m clear, I’ll ask again—are you absolutely sure it won’t repair itself without going in?”
Doctor: “Yes, unless we have a miracle.”
Me: “Do you believe in miracles? I do!”
Doctor: “Yes, I believe in miracles.”
Me: “That’s my hope and prayer, too! I’m going to take my chances & opt NOT to have the surgery… I’ve decided to trust and believe that Jesus, The Great Healer, will heal my internal bleeding. I’ve decided to trust Him and lean on Matthew 19:26: ‘With God all things are possible…’
Me: “So we both give God the glory [if and] when He heals it without surgery?”
Doctor: “Agreed,” he said with a smile and a quiet chuckle as he turned to leave my bedside, and headed for the door.
Against All Odds: The Miracle Unfolds
“You restored me to health and let me live.”
Isaiah 38:16
After my desperate prayers that Holy Thursday, and the heartfelt prayers of my praying family and friends, and making the decision to trust Jesus and believe the Scripture, “All things are possible with God,” I felt less anxious and my condition began to change that evening. I experienced a renewed sense of peace and wellbeing that is hard to describe, and I had the first really good sleep in days. The very next day, on Easter Sunday morning, the nausea lessened, and my hemoglobin lab results began improving significantly. The evidence of the bleeding started to decrease, and within a day and a half of talking with the anesthesiologist, all evidence and signs of the bleeding were gone, and I did not need any more blood transfusions. By all indications, the internal bleeding in both areas had stopped–healed on their own without surgery. I was discharged home the next day with no further bleeding. We never did find the cause, exact location or extent of the bleeding, but Hallelujah! I know God healed me, as there were no further signs of any kind of bleeding after I got home!
Gratitude for God’s Grace
God has miracles great and small for all of us, not just a few church goers. In my experience, one of Jesus’ greatest miracles is not necessarily a physical healing. For me, it is when God sends the Holy Spirit into your life, as He did at Pentecost with the Apostles. That is when you receive the gift of faith, other spiritual gifts, and the Fruit of the Spirit. Pray and ask for the Holy Spirit of Jesus to come into your life. When you seek Him, you will find Him, and your life will never be the same in all the best ways! Let God redeem you, help you clean up your life, and draw you closer to Him.
This is not my first healing. Praise Jesus, through His Love and grace, God has given me other undeserved, undeniable miracles, both great and small, as well, and lots of them! I will share some of them on future podcasts. Today I walk in absolute gratitude for this spontaneous, awe-inspiring healing miracle that Jesus, The Great Healer, has given me.
There is no logical explanation for this healing, but that God healed the internal bleeding, and no doctor can possibly take credit for this wonderful, most unexpected outcome. Knowing that, my medical team didn’t even try to explain away what happened. There was a quiet knowing that this is “not how these things go,” as my anesthesiologist previously said…It was God, through His divine mercy and grace that healed my internal bleeding.
We have to give credit where credit is due, and I’ve been praising Jesus ever since for saving my life—to God be the glory!!!
Through this experience, I learned:
- Our God is an Almighty, Compassionate, and Living God. He hears and answers all of our prayers—both yours and mine!
- We always need to pray and ask for God’s help in every situation.
- Jesus is The Great Healer!
- Believing and trusting in God are the cornerstones of every miracle.
- We need to pray daily, walk in gratitude, and thank God for all of His blessings and miracles.
- When unexplained, blessed things happen, we need to give God the credit.
- Nothing is impossible with God!
