Greetings and welcome to The Inspiration Cafe!

SCRIPTURE OF THE DAY:

SpeakLORD, Your servant is listening.”

I Samuel 3:9-10

We will be talking about how God tries to communicate with us in all sorts of ways—that is, how we can discern what God is saying to each of us.

I’d like to share with you a brief little story about how God has spoken to me in my life. Recently, after praying, I was preparing the weekly message for church. As I studied Bible verses to include in my talk, I kept coming across scriptures that were about Paul the Apostle. As you may know, Paul had something called “a thorn.” It was a difficult challenge that Paul had to deal with for most of his 30 years in ministry.

Though I was not looking for it, I found 7 scriptures that were all about Paul’s thorn. In my discernment, I finally realized that there was a reason I kept seeing Bible verses relating to Paul. So I gathered up all of the scriptures and saved them in a computer file. A few days later, I realized that God had provided all those related scriptures for a reason. He was asking me to write a book about Paul’s the Apostle’s thorn–So I did! I is now in the editing phase. It will be my 7th published book.

That’s just one example of how God speaks to us!

We need to be on the lookout for what God is saying to us, especially since He doesn’t usually talk to us in a way that we can audibly hear with our ears. I have seen way too many miracles not to believe that God is The Great Healer who communicates with us any way He can.  In fact, he is there for us always working all things out for the good.

So let’s take a look at what we know about God. He is The Living God; The Great Healer, Comforter, Protector, Guide—and most especially, our Lord and Savior. He is ever-present, always with us, all-knowing, and believe it not, he knows us better than we know ourselves. He is with us wherever we go, answering our prayers, paving the way for us, communicating with us to help us know His Divine will for us.  He’s there!

“Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go.”

Joshua 1:9

Discernment & Wisdom

God is so loving that he will try to get through to us absolutely any way He can. However, we always need to pray for wisdom and discernment of God’s will first. By so doing, God helps us grow closer to him and stay on the right track as we strive to live a good Christian life. God tries to help us do His divine will, but he also gives us free will so we need to decide for ourselves what is of God and not of God; good and bad, right and wrong. Though he never forces us to do anything, God provides us with unending opportunities to hear him, and serve him, with all our being. Whether or not we do so is another matter—it’s up to us.

The Bible is filled with people whom God directly spoke to, some of them are called prophets. Today, however, today, God has generously provided many other ways for us to hear him, experience him, and understand his will and plans for us.

You may still be wondering how it is possible to have a 2-way conversation, and a close relationship, with God our Creator, someone that you cannot even see with your eyes and hear with your ears. But trust me, we can, and do, if we are aware that He answers our every prayer as only he can. So how do we come to understand what God is trying to tell us through the power of the Holy Spirit? Here are 10 Ways to Discern God’s Will:

  • Pray and ask God for discernment of His Divine Will.
  • Reading scripture, God’s Word, and growing in wisdom.
  • Experience a warm peaceful feeling as when you pray or enter a church.
  • Getting teary or crying when you pray or enter a church.
  • An anxious, uneasy, or apprehensive feeling about something or someone.
  • You experience a gentle knowing.
  • A strong gut feeling–One example of God speaking to you is called a gut feeling. That feeling may actually be God giving you a hint when things aren’t quite right.
  • Dreams
  • Things other people say to you that resonate with you.

“This is how you will know that the living God is among you…”

Joshua 3:10
