Something went wrong.

Breaking the silence. For most people, faith is a very personal thing, something best kept to one’s self. And why not? After all, it is our right to keep our faith private. Sometimes we just prefer it that way as we go about our daily lives. After all, it’s comfortable that way. But consider this…If we don’t share the truth about our Christian faith, who will? Scripture tells us:

“What I say to you in the darkness, speak in the light; what you hear whispered, proclaim on the housetops.”

Matthew 10:27

Today there seems to be a war on Christianity and Judaism in this country. The proof is all around us for those all to witness. Church violence, and intolerance of Christian views and values. If you look closely, it’s there. However, you can also choose not to see it or acknowledge it. These days, some people find any reminders of God or Christianity so offensive, as to have them be aggressively, and legally censored—even statues and memorials publicly removed. Some people work very hard to try to take God out of everything even remotely connected to Christianity in our culture here and around the world.

There are many reasons why someone would not want to share their faith. However, there are many more good reasons to share our faith with others. Today we are going to take a look at the Book of Matthew to reveal what the Bible has to say about this topic. The first scripture is this:

“For I am not ashamed of the gospel. It is the power of God for the salvation of everyone who believes…”

Romans 1:16

I suspect one of the most common reasons why people are hesitant to share their faith is that no one ever really wants to be rejected, mocked or shunned. But the benefits of sharing your faith, and the blessings we receive from God for sharing our faith far exceed any temporary discomfort we may endure as a result of doing so. Scripture tells us:

“Blessed are they who are persecuted for the sake of righteousness,
for theirs is the kingdom of Heaven.”

11 “Blessed are you when they insult you and persecute you and utter every kind of evil against you [falsely] because of me. 12 [Rejoice and be glad, for your reward will be great in heaven. Thus they persecuted the prophets who were before you.”

Matthew 5:10-12

Today’s War on Christianity

Our American forefathers depended heavily on the Christian faith when they wrote the Constitution & the Bill of Rights. It is a well-documented fact. Even our money has inscribed on it:  In God we trust… But some people are trying to change even that!

Judeo-Christian believers know well that their help comes from God, but sadly, it seem that belief is no longer the case for some today. As we stand by quietly, our religious freedom is being taken away little by little both here and around the world. Sometimes it seems that the silence of Christians is deafening. I believe we are at a crossroads; it is time for Christians to break the silence and begin speaking up and sharing their faith even in small ways.

Time for Breaking the Silence

As believing Christians, we are called to bring the light of Christ into this struggling, fallen world. But how can we do that if we are silent? That is exactly why I say it’s time to begin breaking the silence. In order to “be the Light of Christ” in this world, we no longer can keep our faith in Christ “under a bushel basket” as scripture says. In fact, the continuation of Christianity may depend on our sharing our faith! Scripture tells us in the following Bible passage:

“You are the light of the world. A city set on a mountain cannot be hidden. Nor do they light a lamp and then put it under a bushel basket; it is set on a lampstand, where it gives light to all in the house. Just so, your light must shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your heavenly Father.”

Matthew 5:14-16

Silence Is Not Always Golden

As far-reaching anti-Christian efforts are slowly gaining momentum in our society, they present us with various challenges to Christianity—and sadly, they seem to be succeeding to some degree in limiting our free speech, thereby threatening our religious freedom. So it is more important than ever to begin speaking up and sharing our faith. Christianity and the salvation of souls may very well depend on our willingness to share our Christian faith with others. But if the very thought of sharing your faith, even in small ways, floods you with fear and anxiety, this scripture may help you to reach out to others to share your faith with confidence and holy boldness:

“Do not worry about how you are to speak or what you are to say. You will be given at that moment what you are to say.”

Matthew 10:19

Certainly we call have opportunities at times to share our faith with family, friends, and neighbors in some small way. And as you can see, these scriptures you’ve heard today provide the practical wisdom, guidance and encouragement to us all to do so. We need to remember that are never alone, especially when we leave our ‘comfort zone’ to help spread the Gospel of Jesus into this broken world. For Jesus is always with us to protect, guide, and lead the way.

In closing, I pray that you will continue to live by example, and consider sharing your personal faith story with others in some small way as the opportunity arises—and trust me, it will. May God bless you with renewed confidence and new found holy boldness. The benefits of leading souls to Christ are eternal!

“To whomever I send you, you should go; whatever I command you, you shall speak. Have no fear before them, because I am with you to deliver you, says the Lord.”

Jeremiah 1:7-8
