[Jesus said] “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.”

John 8:12

Today we are going to talk about Jesus, the Light of the world. When we ask Jesus to come into our lives, everything changes, as we move from darkness into God’s Light. In this scripture, Jesus himself tells us that if we follow Him, we will never walk in darkness. That is, He will be with us and show us the way we should go. Without Jesus, we are on our own to find our way as we blindly meander along in this life. With Jesus, through the power of the Holy Spirit, we are given Light for the Godly path we walk. In fact, Jesus IS the Light by which we can walk without stumbling; the light that helps us through this journey, keeping us close to Him. Jesus IS the Light of truth that guides us to encourage, help, serve, and lead others to Him. As believing Christians, the Light of Jesus becomes the Light we share with others.

In the following scripture passages from the New Testament, we can learn a lot about the power of Light, as we walk away, and turn away, from sin and the depths of darkness:

“Whoever walks in the dark does not know where they are going. 36 Believe in the light while you have the light, so that you may become children of light.”

John 12:35-36

“God is light; in Him there is no darkness at all.

I John 1:5

46” I have come into the world as a light so that no one who believes in me should stay in darkness.”

John 12:46

“The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.”

John 1:5

Share the Light

So what are we to do as children of Light, and how can we share the Light of Jesus with others? Well, first of all, we need to reconcile with God, then invite Him into our lives. We need to recognize that we serve a merciful, compassionate God, and that all of us fall short of the glory of God. It is impossible to be perfect as hard as we try! For it is only by His grace alone that our sins and shortcomings are forgiven by God again and again, for the asking. Secondly, we need to understand that the closer we stay to Jesus in prayer and through reading scripture, the brighter our own Light becomes; and that Light is meant to be shared with others.

17 For there is nothing hidden that will not be disclosed, and nothing concealed that will not be known or brought out into the open.”

Luke 8:17

We are called to share Jesus’ Light with all we meet, wherever we go, as we accept God’s forgiveness for our sins; and strive to forgive and love others as He forgives and loves us. That’s how we can walk in the Light of Christ, who is the Light of the World. Think of it like we are a tiny candle that has been lit by a beautiful tall candle. By so doing, we give glory to God—through Jesus Christ–and therefore, bring hope and the love of Jesus to all who are around us.

So what does scripture tell us we should do to share the light?

“You are the light of the world. A town built on a hill cannot be hidden. 15 Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead, they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. 16 In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.”  Matthew 5:14-16

“No one lights a lamp and hides it in a clay jar or puts it under a bed. Instead, they put it on a stand, so that those who come in can see the light.

Luke 8:15

In closing, God is Light, and in Him, there is no darkness at all. When we walk in the Light as children of God, we celebrate the fact that nothing is hidden from God’s sight. In essence, children of the light revel in the understanding that God is all-knowing, all-powerful, and ever-present. No one is beyond His sight or beyond His reach. As believing Christians, we are called to share the light of Jesus wherever we go.

“Whoever lives by the truth comes into the light, so that it may be seen plainly that what they have done has been done in the sight of God.”

John 3:21

Good always wins out over evil, and darkness can never withstand the Light of Jesus. For Jesus has overcome sin and darkness, replacing it with his unending Light. The Light of Jesus always prevails, and those who seek Him and strive to come into His light are, indeed, truly blessed by His unending grace.
